Sony is reportedly preparing for another round of PlayStation 3 price cuts, as the company prepares for the release of the newest Madden NFL game from Electronic Arts.

The video game is scheduled for an Aug. 18 release, with a $100 PS3 price cut expected starting on Aug. 1.  It’s most likely a mid-August price cut up will take place around one week before the game is released, though that hasn’t been confirmed as of yet.

The higher price tag on the PS3 has caused it to lag in sales numbers compared to the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii game consoles.  Despite powerful hardware and a built-in Blu-ray player, the lack of an intriguing game catalog has hurt global sales figures.

The 80GB PS3 game console costs $399.99, while a 60GB Xbox 360 is available for $300, with the Wii available for $249.  Both Sony and Microsoft have slashed prices on several occasions, however, Nintendo hasn’t been forced to cut prices.

As the game catalog widens, a cheaper PS3 could finally help woo consumers who are looking for both a game console and entertainment center.  I’ve been happy with the Xbox 360 and Wii, but a lower-priced PS3 certainly intrigues me.

Until then, it’s likely console sales for the month of May continued a slide the video game industry hopes to turn around with lower hardware prices.

If the PS3 receives a $100 price cut next month, is that enough to convince you to purchase one?

yes i would defintily buy the ps3 bros!!!! of course not only since its the best console on the market, but also the best bluray player on the market with the fastest loading times and best player including video and audio and able to decode all audio formats and also one of the THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT 1 of the very very few players that is able to play DIVX AND A FEW OTHER POPULAR FORMATS that other players cannot!!!! its the best and i definitly would be buying one if i did not already own 1, and by the way, I ALSO OWN A XBOX360, along with a wii! so like SPOCK from star trek, my conclusion is LOGICAL! and for everyone else, LIVE LONG AND PROSPER WITH YOUR PS3'S! THEY ARE THE BEST!

It's clearly not the best blue ray player on the market just shows your bias for the PS3. Answer me this can it bit stream DTS-HD master audio? nope can not and never will unless Sony changes some hardware specs. It's a very good blue ray player not the best. now if the price does drop $100 and if there is a game that only Sony carries that I can't live without mayber God of war 3 then I'll buy one.

Maybe a few people know what DTS-HD master audio is, but most people will notice that on a PS3, java menus only takes seconds to load versus a long time on standalones. If you listen to the folks who make BluRay menus, they're often trying to balance their menu designs between what they know will work on a PS3, versus what may work (sluggishly) on the rest.

meh, this price cut is desperately needed, lets hope its not too late!!

i think that the bluray features are good on this machine, and its great for keeping movies(divx, WMV) on too!

hence why i bought a second one for the living room.

Excellent news!.

Does anyone know how much the UK price drop will be?, as these companies always use the $1=£1 when setting the original price up of these machines, but when it comes to price drops they always then suddenly turn around and say "well due to the exchange rate $1 doesn't = £1. So we're just knocking a tenner of it etc...

Hmmm, $100 price drop might get me thinking more about a player but I would really like a burner before I get a PS3 or something for the TV.

And since the PS3 has that cell processor, couldn't they offer software support for DTS-HD? Or is it some kind of hardware implementation, seperate from a decoding problem?

The "best" blu ray player IMO is the one with the best picture, not fastest load times. So to me Panasonic make the best sub $500 blu ray players because they have the best picutre (I can't comment on some high-end Denon, Pioneer or whatever..)

Wouldn't mind picking one up, but not until they bring back PS2 compatability.

Best Blu-ray player? Wait a minute... is Sony holding your family hostage? Blink once for yes, twice for no. LOL. That was quite a long Sony ad... err, I mean comment. I hope your cheque is worth the price of your soul, but I'm sure they throw in a few Sony rewards bucks in your pay envelope to make up the difference.

prices in the UK suck hard man. you've even got to buy a license to watch tv. it seems like a socialist welfare state - high taxes and rewarding the bums and illegals. The US pricing on just about all goods makes every other country look like rip off merchants.

No PS2 compatibility, NO PS3 in my home, period... And until "high" end model has a sub $200 pricetag, won't likely be happening either.

For those wanting PS2 backwards compatibility > what PS2 games are you actually want to play?

All the good PS2 games have better sequels on the PS3 meaning no reason to go back, God of War 1&2 I can give you but GOW3 is due out in a few months making that argument soon obsolete too.

This is about the lamest argument I've ever seen.

So older games are pointless now because they've been replaced by shinier, prettier sequels?

I doubt you would know a good video game if someone bashed you over the head with one.

Right on, brother. Old games rock. I still play some games that require the CPU power of a digital watch. Command HQ, anyone? Newer/prettier games don't necessarily mean better games.

@LucentT and @DukeNukem

If what I said above is the lamest argument you've ever heard, it must be the first argument you've ever heard as I would say its a very good argument.

We are talking about buying a $400 or $300 system that plays "shinier" games. You don't need the power of the PS3 or Xbox360 or even Wii for those old good games you speak of so why would people buy the consoles just to play old games.

So good luck with your Atari 2600 and all the great games you play, while people buying these extravagant machines just for shiny looking games with new fangled remakes with superb graphics can buy the PS3

Also you still have not named the PS2 games worth all this fuss that do not have upgraded PS3 sequels.

If you already have a PS2, what's the point of having a PS3 to play them?

For inquiring minds, I like rainbows, long walks on the beach, FPS games on the PC, getting my rectum swabbed (it happened in the hospital and don't knock it until it happens to you), butterscotch ice cream, chocolate milk, hookers dressed as nuns, and a card game called Euchre.

Getting back to the PS3, I'll never own one. I'm just not into consoles - at any price.

Why would people buy the consoles just to play old games? Here's a few reasons:

- They don't have space to put both a PS2 and a PS3.
- They can't afford to buy a PS3 without trading in their PS2.
- After they trade in their PS2 for a PS3, they want to continue playing the old PS2 games (since upgrade versions usually seem to be pretty much the same thing as the old, just with new, prettier backgrounds), but also want to try a few PS3 games.

In case you're wondering, when I say they, I don't secretly mean me. Like DukeNukem, I hate Sony. I hate them because of what they've done with DRM and what they did to win the video format war.

so let me get this straight, coz this reasoning would mean that you would keep every single console under the sun, because the newer one didn't support it? get real guys, why would you buy a console to play old games anyway? that really defeats the purpose!

Is it just me, or does this strike anyone else as odd that someone that is not into consoles - and at any price. Would make four reaction posts on a news article about a rumored price drop of the current best one (PS3).

Does it also strike people as odd that it seems all the people that are bitching about lack of PS2 support all then say they don't like Sony and wouldn't buy the console anyway if it did offer it?

Its times like this that make you feel good about yourself as there are a lot of much stranger people in the world than you ever could be. http://www.cdfreaks.com/images/smilies/2/smile.gif

I hate to tell ya... but from a retail aspect the key selling point that put Sony over with the PS2 was the fact that your PS1 library of games would still be good and the graphics would be a bit better when played on a PS2, there are many... i'd even venture to say most of the customers who come into our store that have not bought a PS3 have all expressed no interest in the system without backwards compatibility... it keeps the price of used systems that are backwards compatible in the $450 range.. and yes.. people will pay that if they can afford it... others either just grab a 360 or a PS2...
As for who plays old games? We sell more classic systems than anything else.. 10 Nintendo 64's in the last 4 days, 2 Sega Genesis, 4 NES, 1 Atari 2600, 2 SNES, 5 PS2's, 2 Xbox, 1 Dreamcast.. all within the past week... what newer systems sold last week? 1 wii, 1 360 arcade.... that talleys 27-2 .... you tell me who plays old games....

As I type this on my Atari 2600, I wonder what the point of your last comment was? It had nothing to do with the PS3. Are you just starved for attention? Am I not allowed my opinion? Who are you to question my right to free speech? You commies really make me sick.

Anyway, I couldn't care less is the PS3 does or doesn't have support for PS2 games. However, I would think if you wanted to keep your customers happy, you would try awfully hard to make sure that the PS3 had backwards compatibility. Hey, I'm just sayin'.

@ DukeNukem.

RE: "Am I not allowed my opinion? Who are you to question my right to free speech?"

Of course anyone is allowed their opinion, but my interpretation of your earlier posts was that you had no interest whatsoever in the PS3, or in consoles in general. My post was saying that why would someone post criticisms of something they have absolutely no interest in.

For example I have absolutely no interest in Take That or Boyzone, so if I saw a post saying "Boyzone and Take That are considering dropping the price of their CD Albums", I just would have no interest in reading that topic, never mind posting a bunch of times on the subject.

Well, I do have an interest in the PS3 because it's technology. I love technology, but despise DRM. If the PS3 ever comes down to the $200 level I may purchase it for a Blu-ray player (if I decide to go that route) or for my son to play games on. Another reason I post comments to Sony stories is my fans expect to see me rant, and I can't disappoint my fans. For some unholy reason, they find my verbal diarrhea entertaining and righteous. Sure, most of them live at home with their folks and don't get out of the house a whole lot, but dammit I have a responsibility to enrich their tedious lives nevertheless.

@ steveo119

Yes, I'm a grumpy old man. As I sit here, reading your comment and eating Viagra out of a 48 oz. bucket, I can't help but wonder why you like DRM. Do you work for SecuROM? Is MPAA your pimp?

@steveo119 and @DukeNukem.

Everyone is totally entitled to their opinions, and yep I don't want to take anything away from your fans.

My posts above to you and everyone else is that I am just defending my PS3 as I love the darned thing, but I have to add that like you (DuekNukem) I hated Sony due to the DRM thing and refused to buy their hardware again, I was firmly and absolutely in the HD-DVD and Xbox360 camp. But Toshiba lost and my 360 was RROD'ing so bought a cheap 40GB PS3 just as a Blu-Ray player and an interim until the Jasper 360 was released.

It was either the best move or worst move for my Sony hating days, as I love the thing. Best piece of hardware ever owned and wipes the floor with the 360 - Jasper too

So all I can honestly and respectfully say to everyone hating before trying, is think of it like the Dr Pepper advert, don't knock it till you try it!.

The way I understand it is that The PS3, following firmwares 2.30 (released in April 2008?) all supported decoding of DTS-HD MA, and bitstraming of 7.1 raw audio.

http://au.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/system-software/detail/item100770/Update-features-(ver-2-30)/
"Blu-ray Disc™ playback now supports DTS-HD Master Audio™ and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio™ output.*"

Compare that to most BD players that support bitstreaming of DTS-HD MA, but don't have the raw processing power to support decoding of DTS-HD MA.

The result is that any system with a PS3 and older/cheaper (HDMI) receiver that supports raw audio (all of them) support DTS-HD MA.

Whereas if you purchase a BD player that supports bitstreaming of DTS-HD MA, but own an older/cheaper model receiver that doesn't support DTS-HD MA .. then your overall system does NOT support DTS-HD MA, and you'll just have to deal with cruddy DTS sound, or whatever else inferior audio they've thrown on the disc for backwards compatibility.

Peddle your half-baked F.U.D. elsewhere.

uneducated sheeple = $A dime a dozen
that reply = $Priceless

I am not a console game player either (nothing beats a computer), but I have children and several hundred dollars worth of older games (PS2)... I don't want 3~4 consoles laying around or have to switch out every time want to play a game nor am I going to pay $50+ dollars for the new "shinier" sequels for every game and it's called nostalgia; ANYTHING by Squaresoft is still worth playing! (And yes, I still break out my Atari 2600, 7800, 5200, Colecovision, Intellivision I & II, Nintendo & SuperNintendo on ocassion (side note: a company has come out with a new console that will play nintendo and supernintendo game cartridges)). I am NOT a fan of a company telling me what I can or can't watch or play or copy; hence I want my PS2 compatibility and could care less that the PS3 is the best bluray player out there... I am not anti-sony, I AM anti-any company telling me what I can or can't do with content I have purchased... Sony has forgotten that we consumers are what keeps them in business and if you f*** with us enough, the sheeple will wake up and take action.

and Duke... sorry for the rant under your reply, hadn't planned on it when first responding! Although I don't care for Euchre and I'm originally from Michigan (inside joke for anyone from or that lives there)

The problem with the ps3 is that it has no games. People buy the system for the games. Backward compatibility would of helped, but not solve the problem. Final Fantasy 13 has been showing previews since 2006, but the game still hasnt come out. Killzone 2 was overhyped. Metal Gear Solid was the game that they should have hyped up.

No Games???

Are you mad, or just got out of a timeship from early 2007?

Every third party game that has come out for the Xbox360 in the last year has came out at the same time for the PS3 too

The only exception that I can think of was Left 4 Dead, but L4D2 is going to be cross platform.
