12TB HDDs from Seagate to be released within 2 months

Seagate plans to release a batch of 12TB HDDs to 'pilot customers' this quarter. The information comes from Seagate's CEO that mentioned the 12TB disks during an earnings call. The drive will likely be the successor of Seagate's 10TB drive that's currently available.

The company hasn't disclosed any further information but it's likely the drive will be a helium filled HDD. In January this year Seagate introduced its first drive with helium. Helium allows higher rotational speeds and increased data density because the gas is lighter than air. Due to that the disks suffer less from drag and turbulence. The increased density makes it possible to put seven platters in the same space required for five in HDDs containing regular air.

Last month Seagate announced 3 new 10TB HDDs, the Barracuda Pro drives for desktop usage, IronWulf disks for NAS usage and Skyhawk HDDs for video surveillance. The most expensive one of the three, the Barracuda Pro is listed at $508.99 at Amazon, it's likely the 12TB drive will be a bit above that price point.
