3D Blu-ray technology from Panasonic

Panasonic announced that they will be displaying 3D technology based on the Blu-ray format at the upcoming CEATEC show in Japan. The technology isn’t approved by the Blu-ray Disc Association yet, but Panasonic hopes that their display will convince the parties involved to choose their technology.

The method requires the viewer to wear synchronised shuttered glasses, says Josh Dreuth, writer at Blu-ray.com. A Panasonic 103-inch plasma 3DTV and Blu-ray Disc Player will deliver 1920×1080 imaging for both the left and right eye. The two different images will eventually create the promised "3D experience".

Panasonic announced that they already know how they will have to pack two sets of HD images for a full movie on a single Blu-ray disc. This said you would think that a release is around the corner, but it can still take years before the first customers enjoy 3DTV in their homes.

Hollywood has been trying to get 3D technology into theaters, but hasn’t reached major success yet. The studios’ search forced manufacturers to figure out ways to bring the 3D experience to our homes. It isn’t sure whether Panasonic’s technology is the best out there, this is something the visitors at CEATEC will have to judge for us.

The reason why manufacturers have chosen Blu-ray is the only thing that’s clear… Namely the format’s massive data storage and bandwidth properties.
