AMG to launch 3D TV network in US

AMG TV will become the first 3D TV network in the United States, marking the beginning of a new TV era that consumers and movie studios have long awaited.

AMG is being purchased by Signet, and the company hopes to make a big splash in the growing 3D world, by releasing a $50 add-on unit that is able to turn any HDTV into a 3DTV.

"We fully plan to have, as soon as we can acquire the library, the first full-time 3D network in the country," according to Tom Donaldson, Signet Intl. Holdings Exec said in an interview.

The company hopes to receive up to $14 million in capital funding that can be used for hiring new employees, technical development and a wider public relations venture.

I hadn't heard of Signet or AMG TV prior to this news, but can't wait to see if the company really can create a $50 set-top box that can turn any HDTV into a 3DTV.  If true, consumers would have the option of watching 3D content without the need of purchasing a TV specifically designed for 3D support.

Even though many TVs sold on the market are 3D ready, set-top boxes and DVD/Blu-ray players need to catch up, analysts said.  AMG will open up its 3D network to content providers interested in testing the market but do not have the ability to launch their own infrastructure at the moment.

As 3D technology continues to develop at a rapid pace, TV manufacturers are developing new TVs that are 3D-capable, but it's unknown when they'll start being released to consumers.  Sony, Mitsubishi and Philips all have 3D-ready TVs, with several other manufacturers interested in developing 3D TVs in the next several quarters.
