Apple iPhone Baby Shaker app removed

The controversial "Baby Shaker" app previously available for the Apple iPhone has been withdrawn from the extremely popular App store, after several days of heavy criticism.

"See how long you can endure his or her adorable cries before you just have to find a way to quiet the baby down!" was the description posted in the App Store.  The following disclaimer was also posted:  "Never shake a baby."

The 99-cent app immediately drew criticism from child protection groups and some iPhone and iPod Touch owners.  In the game, a user’s goal is to get a baby to quiet down by shaking it until it falls asleep.

It’s unknown how long the program was available, why the Baby Shaker app was removed, or how many people downloaded it before it was removed.  The Sikalosoft-created app reportedly first became available on Monday, and it’s no real surprise that people were quick to be offended by the program.

Apple spokesperson Natalie Kerris said the company "sincerely apologize for this mistake."  Apple also said the game was "deeply offensive."

Each app is pre-screened by Apple before it can become available in the App Store.  The Cupertino-based company didn’t publicly say how many apps have been rejected since the launch of the popular store.  Previously rejected apps include apps involving throwing shoes at former President George W. Bush and a video clip player showing "South Park" clips.
