Apple prepares prizes for the 500 millionth iTunes download

The leading music download service iTunes is very close to its 500 millionth download sales mark.  Just like how Apple offered prizes for the 100 millionth downloader, Apple now has several prizes awaiting the lucky buyer of 500 millionth tune and is currently giving away the prize of an iPod Mini in a user chosen colour along with a 50-song gift card for the lucky buyer of each 100,000th purchase leading up to the 500 millionth mark.

The lucky 500 millionth downloader will be given 10 iPods of their choice from the complete iPod series, a gold gift card worth 10,000 songs and a further ten 50-song gift cards.  They will also get four Coldplay concert front seat tickets (if available) and back-stage passes along with a trip for four to their scheduled tours.

Apple Inc. has put together an array of prizes for the one who downloads the 500 millionth song, and for those who download the songs at each one hundred thousand mark up to 500 million.

At the one hundred thousand mark, the prize is an Apple iPod Mini in the color of your choice and a 50-song gift card to the iTunes Music Store.

The grand prize for the 500 millionth song download is 10 iPods of your choice (iPod, iPod Mini, iPod U2 or iPod Shuffle), a gold 10,000-song gift card and 10 additional 50-song gift cards for the iTunes Music store, four Coldplay tickets and a trip for four to one of their scheduled tour concerts and backstage passes.

Competitions are one way of attracting consumers into buying something or otherwise doing something they would not normally think about.  Even though Apple is clearly the market leader for legal downloads, they figure that these competitions will simply help promote its service even further.  Apple currently has a counter on their website showing what appears like a live realtime counter.  I can confirm however that it is off by a few thousand as I loaded up Apple.com on two different PCs here and the counters varied by a few thousand between the two! :p
