Apple has reportedly sold more than 1 million iPhone 3G S smartphones over its opening weekend, even though the iPhone 3G s launch didn’t receive as much hype as other iPhones.
The iPhone 3G S has an upgraded processor, increased memory storage, higher video capability among other features. The original iPhone 3G sold 1 million units in three-days, but the phone was launched in 21 countries, while the iPhone 3G S launched in just eight countries.
Apple has shown a high level of brand loyalty that most other manufacturers could only dream of having, which has helped keep phone sales high.
Early estimates predicted around 750,000 iPhone 3G S units sold, but that number was later adjusted due to uncounted sales figures from several west coast retailers. Around 43 percent of iPhone 3G S shoppers purchased the 32GB model, with the rest selecting the 16GB model.
Research In Motion (RIM), best known for its BlackBerry line of smartphones, likely will be disheartened to hear 12 percent of new iPhone shoppers were switching to the iPhone 3G S from a BlackBerry model.
Analysts are curious to see if overall phone sales will be able to stay high in the coming weeks — and more importantly, they will see if the iPhone 3G S will be able to continue to steal subscribers away from other networks.
