Dreamcatcher's Painkiller causing trouble with many CD players

BetrayerX used our news submit to tell us about a new game called Painkiller that is probably going to wind up in the contraversial protection catagory. It is reportedly not working in many drives. There are rumblings that the problem was identified prior to release and no action was taken. You can visit this thread to read some more about this protection scheme.

Anybody who wanted to buy this game: HOLD ON! DON"T BUY IT!You have a good chance its not gonna work in your machine! Due to its copy protection, this game IS NOT working AT ALL with a DOZEN drive, including the widely used (HP, Compaq, Dell) OEM LG drives! I compiled the current list - still counting:

  • Pan International CyberDrive 240
  • ASUS CD-S400
  • M a t s h i t a CR-581-B
  • Philips CDD2000
  • LG GDR-8161B - this is in the majority drive in xwX000-family HP WS, also known as# HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8161B
  • Toshiba HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR-8081N (2002 sept laptop drive)
  • LG HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GMA-4020B Apr 2003 IDE (internal drive) - probably none of these LGs are working
  • HL-ST-DVDRAM GSA-4081 - I bought it weeks ago, this is that 8x DVD+/-R/RW/RAM drive!
  • YAMAHA CRW-F1E - the tattoo drive The most disgusting thing is how DreamCatcher handled this problem: nobody ever mentioned ANYWHERE, its not on the box, they did not released a short apology in a press release, NOTHING - only ONE TOPIC on its forum. They obviously knew this problem very well before its release - it was an intentional move to get your money.THis is a CLEAR case, I think.

This story is also at Warp2Search with many comments. There is a pretty lively thread over at Beyond3D as well. Maybe this would be a good topic for discussion over in our Copy Protection Forum.
