The
Weinstein company href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/new_hampshire/articles/2006/10/24/film_company_to_add_anti_smoking_announcements_to_dvd_releases/"
target=_new>has agreed to become the first to insert anti-smoking
announcements onto DVDs that it produces. This is in response to a September
letter to 13 of Hollywood’s major motion picture companies and was signed by
attorneys general from 41 states.

We can expect to see such announcements, at least
with the Weinstien company, to begin with “Clerks II”. The public service
announcements, will be added when the picture you are about to watch, depicts
the actors having a smoke. The initiative is apparently the brainchild of one
New Hampshire Attorney General-Kelly Ayotte.

border=0>“We have been trying for years to get Hollywood studios to work
with us on what we believe is an important and meaningful protection for
our children, and the Weinsteins have taken that all-important first
step,” Ayotte said.

Hmm, I wonder how many children will be watching Clerks
II? I saw the first Clerks and I would not set there with a child and
watch it, or even my parents as far as that goes!

With all the anti-piracy messages already, along with previews etc., this may
be more of an annoyance than anything. Maybe we do need the storage capacity of
blue laser products – for the endless chain of public education campaigns
and health warnings, that is sure to follow this precedent. Possibly, if someone
is spotted eating at a fast food chain, they can warn us that we are all a bit
overweight as well, recommending we eat a carrot instead, or do some sets of
jumping jacks whilst we watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory!

Let’s hope we can chapter skip! Or, we can rebel and use the public service
announcements time, for popping more microwave popcorn, or making a
Margarita. That’s OK isn’t it? Maybe someone will let me know before the show
starts.

Sure then why don't they advertise condoms & "safe sex" on thier DVD's that promote promiscuity. When was the last time you saw people discuss this in a movie before they had sex with someone they just met. Puuuuhhhhleeeeezzz !!!!!!!!!

No one is interested in those silly public service messages, especially us at the MPAA. Instead, more ads should be put on, with rock solid ad skip prevention. I'll see about getting this done. Jack

Will they cut out all the "smoking scenes" in movies too? Yes please do so bcause this is so f*****g important. [I'm sure there are other more 'colorful metafors' to be employed than profanity...]

Who is this "Jack Valenti" really? Returning to the main topic, anti-smoking ads will be 'anti-popular,' simply put.

When they say "protect our children", they may also be thinking about the parents who smoke near them? Comparing smoking with eating fast food is, IMHO, a very poor comparison. While the latter will affect only you, the first, via second hand smoking, will affect whomever is nearby. It's not the same thing, at all.

Good point JonZap, it was not a good comparison. Unless the parents are lazy and take the kids to McDonalds instead of preparing a healthy meal. Or unless kids learn how and what to eat from parents. Then, it is not so bad a comparison. No matter. Anyone with an inclination, can make arguments to push an agenda. The point is, do we need this crap on DVD? This is got me thinking, that's all. I guess, I am wondering where this all will stop if they start such crap on DVD. What's next? Maybe you can tell us where it will stop..I can't. Look, it's bad enough, I have to set through a darn in your face anti-piracy skit on a DVD I legally purchased or rented. Lot's of times, you can't even skip past them like Valenti says. I don't want to have any more morality lessons or health warnings to set through as well. I just want to watch a damn movie. The reason I get a DVD movie is for entertainment..not for some sort of half baked life lessons from the government or any other entity, tacked on in front.

Commercials are annoying, but at least this is a commercial for a good cause (improving personal& public health, the environment, etc) That being said, most commercials are intrusive and annoying. Especially the ones that prevent the skip function. It looks like we will have to continue ripping our DVD's and reauthoring them to satisfy our own needs. :d

It looks like we will have to continue ripping our DVD's and reauthoring them to satisfy our own needs. But thanks to the same governmental entities-this is now against the law. Ooops! Sorry, I don't need any government agency pushing third parties to "educate" me involuntarily via my legitimatre purchases. I'm a big boy now.

Tofurther add to your comment the funny thing is that there seems to be more in front of the DVD that contains a movie we want to watch ever since we U.S. Americans' lost our fair rights to back up a DVD that we own. Am I wrong or does anyone else see a pattern here?:r

If you are who I read about in all these years. I want to say glad to see you somewhere than on a court document and such. Welcome back to the world at war. Where laws are for the rich to get richer and the poor just suffers due to loss of fair rights.:B

Oh well, at least the pirated versions are devoid of all these unwanted extra passengers! Oh the shame of of it all, to be terrorized and sermonized at the same time, by your own DVD player, in your own living room! Where will it all end, oh woe is me?:c
