Gamers Reports announces region coding for Blu-ray games

It is impossible to verify and only one site is reporting this news. In addition, the page IT Media, is in Japanese. However, if we can believe this translation from Gamers Reports, we will see a bit of region coding for Blu-ray discs.

IT Media has announced some details on the Blu-Ray region coding and it holds a nice surprise. Japan, North America, and East Asia will all be sharing one region code. This potentially means that American gamers will be able to import Japanese PS3 Blu-Ray games, and will definately be able to import Japanese Blu-Ray Anime/Movie titles without any hassle. Europe unfortunately will be sharing a region code with Africa so likely not much cross-gaming there. Sorry Europe, looks like you will be getting the gaming bone again.

Masakazu Honda @ ITMedia reports about the final review version of the AACS contents management system for HD formats such as Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD. AACS LA consists of IBM, Sony, Toshiba, Warner, Intel, Microsoft, Matsushita, and Disney.

This seems too bad that the Blu-ray camp may decide to use region coding. Such measures were hoped to be left out of this next generation of software.

Well, it's logical, from sony's perspective. It's just like with DVD region coding. It does not stop piracy, because all pirate discs are region free, but it does help them control prices for different regions of the world, so that cheap discs from China cannot be imported to US because they simply won't play there.

i wonder how many north american can enjoy far eastern stuffs as there will be no english (or even franch) subtitles nor audio tracks. same for the far eastern asians as there will not be many who can fully enjoy english (or franch) version of medias if aussies can share their code with north americans, then that will be something though

I thought Australia is using PAL which is different from NTSC so I wonder if they can play the discs even if it's the same region code. Can someone explain? I know that there's no NTSC and PAL resolution issue for next-gen since they are the same. However, I am wondering about the 50hz and 60hz TV issue.

actually the PS3 will have more problems with this issue, how many people have access to BLU RAY Burners compared to DVD burners, the figures speak for themselves.
