After Warner’s announcement many thought that Toshiba will never see growing sales figures again. Now research from Nielsen shows that HD DVD is growing for the third week in a row. Maybe it’s too soon to say that the format is on it’s way back. But what could be the reason for this possible ’comeback’. Do we as consumers want Toshiba to return, or are the enormeous price drops the main reason for HD DVD’s comeback.
Another impressive news fact is that two HD DVDs are in the top-ten movie list. This didn’t happen for a month and shows something of a first step back in the fighting arena. Some say that the reason for these titles to rank in the top-ten can be found in Blu-ray’s disappointing sales.
Besides bad sales number in the Blu-ray camp, others say that HD DVD’s low pricing is an important factor in Toshiba’s comeback. And if the low price is the main indicator then we can say that it isn’t a comeback. Some will agree with this since a company can’t survive if the prices stay this low, but others think that the content providers might return to the red camp if everybody has a cheap HD DVD player.
