HP unveils the dvd740 series of LightScribe burners

HP has released the specifications of two new LightScribe DVD burners. The dvd740i is an internal model and the dvd740e is an external USB 2.0 model and both support writing 16x/8x/8x DVD+R/DL/RW, 16x/4x/6x DVD-R/DL/RW as well as 40x/32x CD-R/RW:

The drive on the photo above looks like an OEM HLDS (Hitachi LG Data Storage) writer. For the dvd640 drives HP has however used OEM drives from both HLDS and PBDS (Philips BenQ Digital Storage) so it's possible that there will be more than one OEM for the 740 series too. If HP will use HLDS exclusively it's a bit surprising that they don't support DVD-RAM as HP announced in the beginning of the year that it would add support for DVD-RAM to its drives. It's also a bit strange that HP only specifies 40x CD-R speed as essentially all possible OEM drives HP can use support 48x CD-R.

More information about the dvd740i and dvd740e are available here and here. The dvd740i is already in stock at for example newegg in USA.
