LG has announced a new HD disc burner, the first drive available for PCs able to write to Blu-ray and read HD DVD. The drive, GGW-H10NI Super Multi Blu-ray, is also one of the first to support 4X BD-R writing, significantly lowering the time needed to write to a disc, currently at 44 minutes for a full 22GB disc. The 4X media is projected to be available late in the third quarter. The drive looks similar to the LG model, less the HD DVD ROM ability, reported on here in an early review.
The list price is $1199 and obviously you could buy a Blu-ray burner and an HD DVD ROM drive for considerably less. Most buyers will probably hold off for a while because of the high cost, but it is interesting to see the trend moving toward dual use burners.
