Over at the AVS Forums, we can read some posts, that offer some good information on the new Philips Blu-ray player the BDP9000. Some have wondered if this is not a re-badged Samsung, but according to some sleuthing over there, it’s doubtful, as there are some differences in the specs. What is most interesting to me, is that it appears the unit will be offered for less than $900 dollars US! Can this be something to do already with market pressures? We know that these BD devices can run upwards from this price point to even $1300 dollars.

In California, one poster mentioned the Wal-mart clerks, pushing a pallet of the BDP9000’s towards the warehouse, told him the devices would not go on sale until November 1st, but indeed, they will be $899. Whereas another member wrote in, saying: “The Walmart in Chicopee, MA has three units that are already selling for $899.99.”

By reading further into the
thread, we can see that some members there have actually made a purchse and are
reporting back with their thoughts. This person href="http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8724119&&#post8724119"
target=_new>also has a Toshiba
HD-A1.

A quick trip to href="http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5270016"
target=_new>Walmart.com and we can see the BDP9000 offered for $898 and they
say it is in stock, shiping within 24 to 48 hours. Although they list it as a
Philips Blu-Ray DVD Player, BDP900/37.

What may be of interest to those out there with the proper 1080p display, is that if you have an extensive DVD collection, the Philips unit can pump them up via an upscaling chip to this resolution. Just make sure your set has a DVI or preferrably a HDMI connection.

probably chinese out-sourced samsung player with philips skin on user-interface. i heard about the soft image problem with the earlier version of samsung bd player, so the video dac has been changed as it is very common to have different parts through out the life of products as the virtually all manual say "product specifications can be changed without any notification" good thing is that now the product was moved from niche product factory to the mass inexpensive production factories in china

They can keep their crappy Blu-ray hardware. I'm not interested in emptying my bank account to get one. :r

Shocking! :d A comment on that thread reads:
Quote:
I took the Blu-Ray "plunge" with the Philips and I am happy so far when I compare it with my HD-A1 experience. I sure like the short load times ...
What?!? Someone who actually owns both and prefers their Blu-Ray experience over the HD-DVD one? Nah, can't be, can it?

Be cautious about upscaling because the "specifications" picture only refers to HDMI as a way to get 1080p.

Doesn't actually say he prefers the BluRay does he? I have both the Samsung BDP1000 and the Toshiba XA1 - I prefer the operating speed and slickness of the Samsung. But much more important (for me at least) is the AV quality of the Tosh far exceeds that offered by the Samsung.
