Macrovision 2nd-quarter profit rises, guides lower

Macrovision reported a larger net profit for the second quarter yesterday. The company who makes copy protections for VHS tapes, CDs (SafeDisc, SafeAudio) and DVDs is however concerned about continued uncertainties in the economy.

The company's revised estimates are below analysts projections, according to Thomson First Call. In a survey, analysts said they were expecting the company to earn 21 cents a share in the third quarter and 84 cents a share in 2002.

The estimates compare with earnings of 20 cents a share in the third quarter of 2001, and earnings of 82 cents a share for 2001.

The company said it continues to see strength in its DVD business and rising revenue at its Globetrotter Software unit. However, given difficult economic conditions, it remains "concerned" and prefers to remain "cautious" in its outlook.
