Memorex is giving movie watchers another choice when looking for low-cost Blu-ray players, with its MVBD-2510, which will be available for $269.
Memorex is best known to consumers for its blank media, but hopes its latest foray into Blu-ray will help give customers a low-cost alternative to most Blu-ray players. The player ships with Profile 1.1 instead of Profile 2.0, so owners will not be able to download extra content from the Internet, but that's not a surprise because of the lower cost of the MVBD-2510.
It will offer 1080p support, frame rates of 24p or 60p, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, Bonus View 1.1 and 7.1 HDMI digital audio output.
"Our customers want products that bring entertainment into their homes,
but at a family-friendly price," Carla Pihowich, Memorex officials said in a press release. "With this in mind, we have introduced a Blu-ray Disc player that offers consumers the full High-Definition viewing experience, but at a price that almost anyone can afford."
Interested consumers can expect to find the Memorex MVBD-2510 available in late November or early December.
The Memorex MVBD-2510 can be compared with the Insignia NS-BRDVD, a Blu-ray player available at U.S. retailer Best Buy for $230.
As prices continue to drop towards $200, more consumers will likely begin to adopt standalone Blu-ray players rather than purchase the Sony PlayStation 3 game console for its built-in Blu-ray player. Although previous reports indicate prices will remain high because of low demand, a stronger push for lower cost players could help create a momentum shift towards cheaper players.
