Microsoft forces Windows validation for extras & some updates

While the game industry has always been keen in trying all sorts of disc anti-piracy measures to prevent copies of their CD/DVD media from being made, Microsoft on the other hand happily allows backup copies to be made with even the most basic CD copying software, but instead relies  on a combination of product activation and key validation to verify they are using genuine software.  Although product activation has been around since Windows XP first debuted, up until recently, users could get around this by using counterfeit corporate keys published on pirate software websites as well as corporate key generators as these keys not require activation.  However, Microsoft’s update site started checking for counterfeit keys a while back and they recommended performing Windows Genuine Advantage check per downloading non-critical updates.

Now Microsoft has updated their anti-piracy programme such that it is mandatory to do a validation check to download non-critical software.  The validation check utility checks for blacklisted keys and now even checks for keys that have not been issued by Microsoft.  Other checks include validating software authorisation keys such as from an activation (depends on OS) and system hardware.  However, unlike its previous validation check, this updated version no longer asks the user to key in their product ID.  In an aim to cut back on the number of PCs being exploited with viruses and worms (such as to relay spam), Microsoft will continue to offer critical patches via the Windows Update utility or from Microsoft’s download site to those with an invalid OS key.  If you copy, please show your appreciation by linking back to CDFreaks.
If the validation check fails when a consumer tries downloading a non-critical update or enters the Windows Update website, the consumer is given two options:  1 – Fill out a piracy report and send Microsoft a proof of purchase including the counterfeit media to receive a free genuine replacement of Windows XP Home/Professional.  2 – Just fill in a piracy report and get a genuine replacement OS for half price.

>Microsoft is making new demands.

The software behemoth started a program on Monday that requires users of its Windows operating system to prove their copies are legitimate. If not, Microsoft will not let them get add-ons to Windows XP.

The program, called Windows Genuine Advantage, will frisk your machine to see if it’s running an authentic version of Windows. If it detects a counterfeit copy, it will offer two options ‘” users can fill out a piracy report, provide proof of purchase and send in the counterfeit CDs to get a free copy of Windows Home Edition or Windows Professional; or those who just submit a piracy report ‘” telling when, where and from whom they got the software and send in the counterfeit copy ‘” will get either version of Windows at half price.

In the spirit of further generosity, Microsoft will allow users of unauthorized Windows programs to install security-related updates, which are used to plug software flaws exploited by viruses and hackers.

So far, while Microsoft has blocked off access to non-critical updates via their website to those with an invalid key, they still mention the file name of their downloads and most of these are widely available on some file mirror and third party Windows update websites.  However, with the validation process now mandatory, chances are that Microsoft will either start forcing other websites to put users through Microsoft’s validation check or in my opinion even start embedding validation checks in their upcoming updates such as the check for known blacklisted keys in Service Pack 2.  It will be interesting to see if Microsoft even mandates product activation for all its future OS versions, especially since product validation is now mandatory in the corporate versions of its OS (apart from to install the OS and to install critical updates).

When a user tries to download a non-critical update, they are asked to perform a validation.  The same goes with performing a Windows update such as shown on the screen to the right.  If you copy, please show your support by linking back to CDFreaks.
If the validation passes on the Windows Update site, the user is forwarded on to the page listing the Windows updates available.  The partial screenshot to the right shows what the what happens when the validation passes when attempting to download a non-critical update.

However, if the validation fails for either the Windows update or the attempted download of a non-critical update, the user is presented with a warning similar to that shown below along with a choice to send in a piracy report, counterfeit media and proof of purchase for a free replacement genuine copy, send in a piracy report only for a half price genuine copy replacement or a list of resellers to purchase a genuine copy from.

But you can still download the updates "by hand"...

But why do you want to "hack" it if you don't have a pirated version of Windows? This validation check is not big deal for a legitimate user and only takes 2 secs.

'cause they collect your data for "statistical" purposes....

And what personal data exactly??? Various reversing groups have already reported that the data MS read for the activation/validation purpose are purely silly things like hardware config and such and they do not collect any personal data that can be important. Do you really beleive if MS, the big evil, ever collected something important the whole anti-MS scene would remain calm and would not make a super big deal out of it?

There is a need to hack because there are some with legitimate license keys that will not pass the geniune advantage authentication.

This is kind of like what DirecTV did with the black listed un-subscribed cards, plus they also do a while list. I wonder if the nice people who make keygens will add the feature to try to validate the number with the Microsoft server, so you could leave it running for a few months and then end up with a list of valid keys if you happen to find any.

For the Windows Update site you load the WGA plug in. Then you disable it here: Internet Options Programs Plugin management (I am translating from a non English XP WP2) Disable the WGA plug in and restart I.E. Check out this site: http://www.extended64.com/blogs/rafael/archive/2005/07/27/1026.aspx .

I was having problems with my legal code, as I transversed it over 3 pc's since i bought my original copy of XP. (ie i've upgrade twice since 2000). anyways i used that one where, after you've been forced to update to the newest update software (including wga), you got to tools>manage add-ons>add-ons that have been used by internet explorer> select the genuine advantage one>then disable it. now i can get my updates without having to call up microsoft and explain my stupid hardware changes to them. hope this helps people in the same situation as me. btw my install is the original xp immediately upgraded with sp2, then all the updates until now.

We all knew this was coming people, as soon as MS made it optional, obviously they were going to require validation. And for all those who fear privacy, you're just laying on the BS because you know your copy is pirated. Although IMHO if you stole Windows, might as well hold off on the optional update and just purchase Vista (Longhorn) when it comes out in 14 months. But I wouldn't be surprised that MS did this in hopes they can drive up sales, only to make people upgrade to Vista later.

I've given the Windows Genuine Advantage tool a try on several PCs using a legitimate version of Windows with both Internet Explorer and Firefox. For the Windows Update, all showed no issue and the same went with downloading updates that requires validation using Internet Explorer. Interestingly, on Windows 2000 PC's, I get "Genuine Windows Software", where as on Windows XP PC's, I get "Thank you for using Genuine Windows". However, if I use Mozilla Firefox, it passes on all but one Windows 2000 based PC. Apparently I get the following error when I run the validation tool: Code not available. The validation code could not be obtained. This may be due to technical difficulties, or you may be running an unsupported operating system. Please close this window and attempt the validation process again, or use the Back button in your Web browser to return to the download details page. [Error code: 0x80040265] The next page shows "Thank you for taking part in genuine Windows validation. ....." Once I click 'Continue', it shows "Validation Not Complete: Expired Validation Code", along with the option to obtain Genuine Windows Software, contact my reseller or turn on automatic updates.

2 - Just fill in a piracy report and get a genuine replacement OS for half price. Does that mean MS are having a 50% sale? Why would I buy windows from a retailer when MS are under cutting them by 50%? So if anyone is looking for a new copy of windows then load up a pirate copy and get MS to give you a big rebate.:d

Run that by me again? Rather than paying for a legal copy of XP when it was released, which I did, Microsoft would sell it to me for HALF PRICE if I'd been running a pirate copy for four-and-a-half years? What kind of a way is that to encourage honesty? Have they considered how their real customers feel now, or are we so much in the minority that we don't matter?

I'm still very much miffed with all the BSOD's from that wonder of wonders-Windows 95. Remember all the headaches you had to endure because you thought you had made a mistake. No, it was built-in to the OS. I think they should allow me to trade my Win95 genuine disk for a free copy of Vista!

Sorry Micro$oft. Open "Internet Explorer", go to "tools" and then "Internet Options", then "Programs" and then "Manage Add-ons" and look for "Windows Genuine Advantage" and disable it. Problem solvered. So much for "mandatory".

Genuine Advantage Crack Thursday, July 28, 2005 Microsoft "Genuine Advantage" cracked in 24h: window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all' AV says, "This week, Microsoft started requiring users to verifiy their serial number before using Windows Update. This effort to force users to either buy XP or tell them where you got the illegal copy is called 'Genuine Advantage.' It was cracked within 24 hours." Before pressing 'Custom' or 'Express' buttons paste this text to the address bar and press enter: javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all') It turns off the trigger for the key check. :d

I run Windows XP with Service pack 1. I went to "Internet Explorer", then "Tools", the "Internet Options", but couldn't find the "Manage Add ons" anywhere under the "Programs" tab to disable "Windows Genuine Advantage". But I did find "Enable Interated Windows Authetication" under the Advanced tab. Is this the same thing? If I disable this, will I have trouble with my automatic updates in the future? By the way, I already authenticated my copy, so I know I'm OK, but I just resent being checked up on this way.

I cannot even reach the window offering me to choose 'Custom' or 'Express'... I get the error # 0x80072F76 instead... It does so even after desactivating WGA in "Manage Add ons" Any ideas...
