Microsoft has announced that they will stop with the production of the HD DVD player for the Xbox 360. Everybody that bought the player shouldn’t worry since Microsoft will continue to support these customers where needed. Rumors are now saying that the giant is preparing to start producing Blu-ray players for the 360 console.

Other rumors say that the price of the HD DVD player will be slashed even more, but I can’t think of anyone being interested in buying a ‘dead product’. Sales figures show that the player was sold 300.000 times, main reason for this number can be found in the price drop that Microsoft issued a month ago.

Currently the price is set at 120 bucks… Do you know anyone that’s buying the player now?

This is good. Now that HD-DVD is dead everyone should drop it, or get rid of it. This way we will only have one format. Even though there could be drawbacks with one format.

Best Buy has lowered its price on the drive to $50, which still includes King Kong and the 5 by Mail. Yeah, HD DVD is dead, but its still Hi-Def for $50 and 6 movies. But I'll pass.

Actually if you have a Xbox with a HD DVD drive it's not too expensive to add a Blu-ray drive when they come out and you effectivly have a dual format player.. Wonder if the BD player will be region free??

The Blu-ray drives are region locked as per the BR standard. A stupid decision and one where hd-dvd had an advantage - no region codes. It's odd why sony drop region codes on games but kept them for movies. I'm thinking it was so people could no longer mod a ps3 and use the reason 'being able to play overseas games" as a legal loophole.
