Momitsu’s BDP-899 may hold the distinction of being the world’s first region-free Blu-ray player.

The BDP-899 plays Blu-ray and DVD discs from any region and is BD Live compatible. Users can easily switch between Blu-ray regions A, B and C by entering a six digital code using the remote control. As such, it’s likely to be frowned upon by the Blu-ray Disc Association.

The player also handles a wide range of formats such as Xvid, MPEG1, MPEG2 , MPEG4(AVI), MP4 HD, WMV9, JPEG, BMP, PNG, TIFF, JPEG2000 and GIF. It ialso decodes high-def audio formats such as Dolby TrueHD.

The BDP-899 is available for US$349 from online stores such as HKFLix.

It's about time! Are you listening Oppo? Not only will their new player NOT be BD Region Free, it won't be DVD Region Free either!
Only time will tell if there is modified firmware to make it free.

Oppo cannot write firmwares that break US law as their firmware programmers are/were located in California. Momitsu is chilling their heels in China and have this advantage of being beyond the law.

Having said that, I would not pass up an Oppo player for this reason as they have great support and firmwares for their hardware devices. I also have a Momitsu and it is nice too! Either company is first rate IMHO and you will not go wrong with either one.

Both companies will put out timely firmware updates if their are ever any issues with their products.

I am glad to see both companies doing so well.

Rumor is that the BDA may blacklist this player. Not official yet though, but the result of that is that the player will not get firmware updates to support the newest BD decryption keys and newer discs won't play.
Personally, I can't see a reason to buy a region-free DVD player if the DVDs look like crap when you play them.
The player itself is a clone of several other generic players available with other labels. So essentially you're paying $350 for a $200 player.
