NEC drives to feature labelling technology from Yamaha

Liggy, our Site Administrator used the news submit during a (very rare) free moment at work to quickly translate this Heise article for us English speaking CD Freaks.

width=132 align=right border=0>Yamaha expanded their T@2 technology to a new LabelFlash technology which allows labelling your discs with your burner”s laser within 5 minutes. On the back of their reflection layer, LabelFlash discs have a coloured area that”s used by the burner for labelling the disc. Since the colour is on the back of the reflection layer, it is protected by a 0.6 mm polycarbonate disc. Disc prices are expected to be about 20% higher than for current discs. CD-R with this technique are not planned at the moment. The first burners supporting this technology will be the half height drive ND3551A and ND4551A and the slimline drive ND7551A from NEC.

Those of us that can speak German may wish to visit this Heise link and to view the original source detailing this new labelling technique. Thanks Liggy, for giving us a heads up on this story, we have to think that this will light a fire under any posible advancements in LightScribe which takes considerably longer to label with. The sample here doesn’t look too bad. Plus it is a color other than Sepia. We have to wonder what other colors are possible.

great, but will the disks be available for reasonable prices & availability? for 5 min burn, not bad but still lightscribe seems better in terms of quality

Why bother with this when a 60 quid inkjet printer can do full colour in no time at all

Awesomeness. I still have my Yamaha CRW-F1 with disc T@2 So am I to understand it refocuses the laser to another "layer" for labeling so that you don't flip the disc?

From what I understand, the coloured area is on the back of the reflection layer. This means that you will have to flip your discs.

Oh thanks for the info. Sounds like an interesting new tech to play with. Lightscribe is cool, but 27 minutes a disc, not very cool.
