President Barack Obama is a couple of months into his presidency, and people are still waiting to see who he sides with on certain issues. Following in the steps of the Bush administration, Obama has sided with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) against someone accused of being a peer-to-peer pirate.
There were "harms caused by copyright infringement" and Internet piracy helps limit "a copyright owner’s ability to distribute legal copies of copyrighted works. The public in turn suffers from lost jobs and wages, lost tax revenue, and higher prices for honest purchasers of copyrighted works," a recently filed legal brief said.
Obama has also picked several former music executives as associate attorney generals in his current administration, which alarmed music industry observers. Appointing Tom Perrelli Donald Verrilli, who is now serving as associate attorney general and associate deputy attorney, made some analysts believe it was a sign Obama would be more likely to side with the music industry.
Although this was just one specific case, it’s more likely he’ll side with the RIAA and other industry copyright holders in future cases — it should be interesting to see how involved the administration will be in legal matters, such as file sharing and copyright issues.
Specifically, the Justice Department has closely watched the case between the RIAA and Joel Tenenbaum, who is being defended by Harvard law professor Charles Nesson and several Harvard law school students. Nesson and students say the RIAA relies on Daconian laws that are the equivalent to "essentially a criminal statute," which makes it unconstitutional.

Did they contribute to Obamas campaign?
At the time I was denounced by some for not buying into the "everyone's a winner" dream, looks like we may have found our winner.
What you expected from someone who picked Biden to run with ?
Ah.. yes it was "republican lies" before ..
People just choose in what to believe and in what not instead of learning the facts and then get disapointed.
And btw: Obama's compain was also heavily funded by Hollywood.
Like many other voters you're starting to see the truth.
Obama didn't "side" with the RIAA. The Department of Justice did. The top positions right now are held by former RIAA attorneys. It doen't take a rocket scientist to figure out how they are going to react to file sharing.
We can bitch all we want, but it is illegal and if you get caught, you are going to have to settle.
File sharing is not really piracy and sharers don't earn money from it, but it's illegal in the US, so be careful.
It drove me crazy how blindly most people followed every word the "savior" uttered. More like the anti-christ.
Now I'm no fan of either the republican or demorcratic party, they all lie. But this guy tops them all, he could totally ruin this country.
Here is why you wont hear of anyone getting thrown into court:
Thanks to a measure passed by Congress in the year 2000, just prior to Christmas break, the Credit Default Swaps were for the first time made legal and regulation of these vehicles was made impossible. Brilliant!
Phil Gramm and Alan Greenspan persuaded Congress to make it illegal to regulate CDS and derivitives. the idea was that the problem was to much regulation that stifled "creativity" when making financial deals in the market.
This is the dirty little secret that none of our "Representitives" ever speak about. When the bill was passed, Gramm even crowed that the measure would make the US the leader in world financial markets. This is the same douchebag that whilst running McCain's campaign and the meltdown began, called the people of the US "A nation of whiners" He thought the economy was in great shape. This is why McCain faltered and said the "fndamentals of the economy are strong" - he was listening to Gramm.
So, now we have the same bunch of government dildos bailing out the banks, WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS that they enabled to steal everyones retirement.
What the hell does Obama think our banks, insurance companies, and half the corporations in America are doing to the American PEOPLE when giving themselves however the hell much of the 'stimulus' money Obama himself is shoving down their throats? What a pathetic hypocrit(sp?)! Throw Bush back in the ring, we're all so screwed now it won't make any difference.
Glad they admit that anti-piracy tactics only end up screwing the people who buy stuff legally.
Sounds like it may come to the Moody Blues "To Our Children's Children's Children"
