Sony and NEC announced yesterday that they’ve reached an agreement to shift 45% of NEC’s stock in Sony NEC Optiarc to Sony. This makes Sony NEC Optiarc a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Sony group.

In 2006 Sony and NEC came together to use both companies key strengths and eventually formed Sony NEC Optiarc. The company’s main goal was to achieve further business expansion, but as a result of the recent stock transfer Optiarc’s focus will now be to strengthen its interaction with Sony group’s product and device businesses to streamline decision-making processes.

The press release (.pdf) tells us that NEC will continue to contribute to the advancement of Sony NEC Optiarc’s optical disc drive products through developments that are carried out by the NEC corporation.
