Despite the newer next-generation video game consoles available today, the Sony PlayStation 2 remains the most used console, the latest Nielsen Media Research study reports.
The PS2 takes up 30.2 percent with the Microsoft Xbox 360 console in second place with 18.3 percent. The Nintendo Wii — which has dominated sales charts since its release — was in third place with 13.5 percent. The original Xbox grabbed 9.1 percent, ahead of the Sony PlayStation 3 with just 7.7 percent.
The PS2 dominated 2007 with 42 percent overall, but Sony put all of its effort into promoting the more powerful and newer PS3, helping it get up to 7.7 percent when it was just 2.5 percent in 2007.
The Wii had the biggest jump in time played, according to Nielsen, with a jump from 5.5 percent in 2007 up to 13.5 percent in 2008.
Nielsen also listed the most played games in the year, with Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft easily taking the top spot, with each WoW player racking up 671 minutes of game time on average per week. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was in second place with 404 minutes per week and Halo coming in third, with only 295 minutes.
