Panasonic opens 3D Blu-ray lab

Japanese tech giant Panasonic publicly announced its new 3D research labs located in Hollywood. The laboratory is now ready for researchers to continue working on a new 3D format that is expected to be ready soon.

The company first talked about the laboratory last month during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Panasonic will use the facilities to help create a 3D FUll HD (3D FHD) Blu-ray format while working with Hollywood movie studios.

The new lab is located in Universal City and will have movie studio executives dropping by to observe development on Panasonic's 3D Blu-ray hopes.

"Panasonic recognizes that for 3D FHD to succeed, just like Blu-ray, collaboration on research, development and production with studios and content providers is absolutely essential," Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory Managing Director Eisuke Tsuyuzaki said in a statement.

If all goes according to plan, Panasonic hopes to have 3D FHD Blu-ray products ready for 3D equipped home theaters sometime in 2010.  During CES, the company's test model included a 3D-ready digital cinema projector, 3D-ready MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Encoder and a 3D plasma display.

"The creation of the new PHL Authoring Center will enable Hollywood to start trial production and ultimately create commercially available 3D FHD titles to realize a new window into reality, and elevate the level of High Definition entertainment that consumers can enjoy in their own homes."

There is still some doubt as to whether or not Panasonic will be able to have a working format ready in 2010, but we'll just have to sit back, wait and see what happens.
