Philips announces dual layer DVD burner

On PCWelt.de we can read an article about Philips presenting a new DVD burner at the CeBIT 2004. Unlike many other burners, this will probably be the first burner to support dual layer DVD recording almost doubling the capacity of a burned DVD.

Philips will introduce their double layer DVD burner "DVDRW 885K". This burner writes to DVD+R discs with almost twice the capacity compared to current DVD burners.

The first layer of a DVD+R is written wir 8x speed while the second layer is written with 2.4x. DVD+RW are only supported with single layer and written at 4x.

The read speed of this device is 12x for DVDs and this drive is also able to read DVD-R(W). CD-R are written with 24x, CD-RW with 10x and CDs are read with 40x. Buffer underrun protection is implemented with "Seamless Link". The device will be sold beginning in July. The retail price is not known yet.

Starting with this burner, the need for DVD compression software like DVD Shrink, CloneDVD and many others will probably decrease rapidly.
