Playstation 3 supported disc and AV codec formats revealed

29 Oct 06 02:10 by Seán Byrne in category Uncategorized To news archive

According to Softpedia, the disc, audio and video types supported by the Playstation 3 have been revealed.  As expected, the player will be capable of playing back Blu-ray ROM and the recordable BD-R and BD-RE formats.  For audio CD playback, it supports CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW and Super Audio CD and for DVD Video playback, it supports DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW.

When it comes to AV codec’s, its audio codec support includes AAC, WAV, MP3 and ATRAC, its video support includes MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 SP and MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 and its image support includes JPEG, PNG, BMP and GIF.  So far, this console is still set to launch in November, unlike Sony’s Blu-ray player which has been delayed several times since the time the PS3 had been originally delayed to November.  Thanks to johnzap for sending us the following news:

alt="" hspace=18 src="http://www.cdfreaks.com/contentimages/newsimages/1369986412" align=right
border=0>The image, video and music formats included in the features of the PS3 are similar with the formats supported by the PSP. In the video category, Sony has implemented PS3 support for MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 SP and MPEG-4 AVC/H.265 formats. As regarding audio, the included formats are: AAC, Wav, MP3 and ATRAC. JPEG, PNG, BMP and GIF are the image formats supported by the PS3.

Unlike the PS2, this upcoming console surely has a fairly wide codec support.  It is also interesting to see Super Audio CD support, as this does not seem to be a feature included with other Blu-ray players, never mind the HD DVD Players.  ATRAC support comes of little surprise on the other hand, considering how much Sony tried pushing this format.

johnzap added: A
good range of supported formats, I would say? Certainly better than the Xbox
360. Furthermore, I suppose it should be playable directly from the console,
i.e. no need to a Windows Media server PC as is the case of the Xbox360? A few
more weeks and all will finally be known for sure

No DVD+R or DVD-RAM support. Typical bloody Sony.

No DivX or XviD? I'm sure DVD+R will work even if it isn't specifically listed... heck, Sony is PART of the DVD+RW alliance!

DVD+R would work I'm guessing if it's burnt with DVD-ROM booktype.

Doesn't mention VC1 support? Presumably this is a typo as that video codec is required in order to play some BD-Videos (Warner titles!). And what about next gen codecs? Does it support internal DTS-HD Master Audio decoding into PCM for output via HDMI? Ditto Dolby TrueHD? Ditto Dolby Digital Plus (BluRay Variant)?

MPEG4 SP is the stuff that Divx and XVid are made up of. Therefore they should work.

DVD+R should be supported it is used in hte new HD camcorder that records to DVD and Sony states the PS3 will play discs from this camcorder.

In the original text it says that it supports H.265, which won't be available for another few years.

Yeap, that's what I think too. DivX and XviD are MPEG-4.

I think they mean H.264. Pretty soon we'll know for sure.

Not to enthused by the audio codec support, Ogg flac and a few others would have been nice. also might have been cool to try to support a few odd containers like ogm and mkv, holy crap that woulda ruled.
