RealNetworks Harmony updated once again

Gil T Pleasure used our news submit to tell us "On related news, RealNetworks has released an updated version of Rhapsody that lets people listen to 25 songs a month without paying anything at all, a move meant to challenge Apple's iTunes."

Looks like the imagineers over at Real have once again twiddled around with the iTunes DRM and quietly released a newer version of the Harmony program that allows Napster tunes to be played upon the venerable iPod. This has to be one of the greatest jobs in the world, I bet those guys at Real are having some fun with this! Meanwhile, Steve Jobs is pulling his hair out as his little iTunes fifedom comes under threat again.

On Tuesday, a RealNetworks executive said his company had re-established compatibility with all iPods..."Harmony now supports all shipping iPods, including iPod Photo," said RealNetworks Chief Strategy Officer Richard Wolpert.

I had to chuckle a little bit at this story, because if you read the whole article, record industry executives are supposedly miffed at the incompatibility of the myriad of DRM "solutions" out there on the Internet. Sighting that copy protections have "fragmented the industry", they have reportedly gone so far as to pester Steve Jobs into opening up his platform to the competition.
