Global disc manufacturing giants Ritek and CMC will soon enter into new recordable media licensing agreements with Philips Electronics.
Philips played a key role in the initial development of optical recording technology and now owns numerous tech patents related to recordable CD and DVD media, including both DVD-R and DVD+R. The new licensing agreements will last throughout 2012.

Proper licensing of Philips patents ensures that licensees will be able to export their recordable media products throughout the world, without fear of legal, financial or political reprecussions.
Disputes over recordable media patents owned by Philips have been a common occurrence over the years, as some manufacturers attempt to skip out on paying royalties as required. Manufacturers have been sued, blocked from importing their products into certain countries and hindered in other ways.
Philips has also indicated that they intend to strengthen their relationships with Customs officials in various countries to further block unlicensed optical discs from being distributed worldwide.
