SanDisk has introduced a new line of high-capacity solid state drives (SSDs) the company says is ideal for notebooks.
The company’s third generation of SSDs, the G3 Series, was first introduced during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The G3 Series currently has two SSDs, including a 2.5-inch C25-G3 and 1.8-inch C18-G3. Each size will have storage capacities of 60GB, 120GB, and 240GB, with pricing of $149, $249, and $499.
The new series has read/write speeds of 300 MB/s and 140MB/s. They are "more than 5 times faster than HDDs used by laptops" and "2 times faster than SSDs shipped last year," according to SanDisk.
SanDisk expects to have its new SSDs available in the middle of 2009.
"With large capacities and aggressive pricing, SSDs are poised to enter mainstream corporate notebooks in 2009," SanDisk SSD VP and manager Rich Heye said in a statement.
Most SSDs used today are found in netbooks or in the enterprise, several companies have worked to try and offer higher storage capacities with lower prices. Although widestream adoption is still years away, SSDs are ideal for netbooks and regular notebooks because they run cooler, run faster, and don’t have any moving parts.
Lowering the cost will help SSDs receive more attention, and will convince users to pay attention to the format.
