Some regioned coded Blu-ray titles are not region locked

While consumers would have liked the movie industry to move away from the ridiculous regional control system on next generation discs, unfortunately the Blu-ray Disc Association decided to enforce a regional coding system for Blu-ray, splitting the globe into three different regions.  However, even though some studios releasing titles on Blu-ray started region coding their Blu-ray releases, apparently only a handful of titles are actually region-locked, according to High-Def Digest, which our editor Quema34 came across.  This means that many titles can be played on Blu-ray disc player of a different region despite being supposedly region region locked.

So far, Warner and Lionsgate have yet to adopt Blu-ray region coding, so consumers who buy titles from either of these two studios from a different region will be happy to know that they will play on their player.  As Warner Bros was originally tried opposing regional control for Blu-ray, there is a good chance they may never start region locking upcoming titles.  With confusion over which titles are region-locked by the other studios who took on regional control, fans have set up a website listing which US and EU Blu-ray titles are actually region locked and those that are just region coded, but are not locked.  Unfortunately, going by the site, all FOX and Disney region coded titles have been tested as region locked.

At this time, those lucky enough to own the US released Samsung DB-P1000 Blu-ray player with the original firmware will be able to play Blu-ray titles regardless of the region.  However, it appears that the updated firmware and the DB-P1000 model released outside of the US are region locked.

Having no region coding is one big plus for the HD-DVD format. If I as a customer can choose between region locked (Blu-ray) and region free (HD-DVD), I'll buy the region free product.
