Japanese technology giants Sony and Panasonic have announced that they will start the joint development of next-generation OLED (organic light-emitting diode) TVs and their goal is to start mass producing low cost high resolution OLED panels during 2013. They will use a, by Panasonic developed, printing technique to manufacture OLED panels, which is different from current, more expensive techniques used by competitors such as LG and Samsung.
It’s an interesting move, as Panasonic has previously mainly focused on plasma screens, of which the technology is losing popularity pretty fast. Sony on the other hand is having overall difficulties and has confirmed that it will lay off about 10k of it’s employees this year. It will be interesting to see if both companies are able to fight back in the TV market by working together on these next-generation OLED screens.
6 Comments on Sony and Panasonic team up for cheaper OLED TVs
If there was ever a case of, "Shut up and take my money", this is it.
We've been led to expect affordable OLED TVs for years now and so far it's been very slow progress.
Hopefully this will add some momentum and not end in bitter lawsuits.

Seriously, this will be a great thing for TVs and computer monitors. Lower power consumption, thinner screens, but did they solve the problem of the blue OLEDs degrading faster than the other colours?

G.E. has a technique similar to making newspapers, a continuous roll system it has been working on for years. They have one unit the size of a trailer of a tractor trailer truck. These screens will e throw away and the materials for the OLED screens (not the glass) is water soluble. These are very recyclable. The electronics that power them can be used for a long time. Theoretically, upgrading to a larger TV could be as simple as buying a new OLED panel.
Dupont says it can print a 50" OLED TV screen in 2 minutes, and that was a while ago.
