Sony boasts fast-loading Blu-ray player

A new Blu-ray player from Sony can start up in just six seconds.

Sony doesn't include more details in its press release for the BDP-S360, and only says its quick start up mode "allows you to begin operating your Blu-ray player in just six seconds." If this claim is accurate, it's pretty impressive considering the typically slow boot times of other players.

For reference, ZDNet did a comparison of startup times for Profile 2.0 Blu-ray players. Samsung's BD-P3600 clocked the fastest play and load time at 41 seconds, and the slowest was Pioneer's BDP-LX71 at one minute and 54 seconds. Be aware, however, that ZDNet timed until the disc started playing, while it seems that Sony is shaving off some seconds by calculating boot time only.

Other features of the BDP-S360 include 7.1 surround sound compatibility, DVD upscaling and Precision Drive technology that corrects scratches and other disc issues. Owners of Bravia TVs and home theaters can sync all the controls to one remote.

I don't see any pricing or availability details in the press release, but J&R has the BDP-S360 listed at $300 and "coming soon," with pre-orders available.
