TDK announces 48X TDK veloCD

TDK has announced it’s 48x drive, the TDK 48x VeloCD. This new TDK model is able to write at 48x speed, rewrite at 24x and read the data back at 48x.

The writing strategy used is CAV which makes the TDK drive possibly one of the fastest drives currently available. Here is the usual ‘it’s really a great drive’ part from the press release:

The TDK 48X veloCD dramatically raises the bar in CD burning performance, flexibility and ease of use. It’s remarkable 48X write speed enables a full CD-R to be burned in less than two and a half minutes, and because veloCD utilizes the Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) method of writing to disk, unlike drives that use Constant Linear Velocity (CLV) technology, CD recording performance is smoother, with less chance of write errors.

Standard CD burners typically write to a disc in a series of “steps,” where the drive writes a section of the disc at one speed, then ramps up to a faster speed for the next “zone,” and so on. While standard burners engage buffer underrun protection during these “steps,” which can result in a greater frequency of write errors, the 48X veloCD writes to disc in an uninterrupted manner, for a smoother, continuous burn that virtually eliminates CD write errors. As an added benefit, when recording discs that contain smaller amounts of data–which is typical of many recorded CDs–the discs can be burned at a much faster rate compared to using a standard CD drive.

The drive comes with Nero Express and will be available in July 2002 at a suggested retail price of $109. Read the entire press release here.

Note that TDK is a know rebadger what means they get a drive from another manufacturer and put their name on it, so you could actually buy a e.g Sanyo or Lite-On drive with a TDK label on it.

They may be rebadges, but they're blue! :4 I've got the 40/12/48 model and it's quite a performer, even though it's a sanyo

Just one quesiton. We all know they are a rebadger but who are the rebadging here???? 24 speed re-write. Okay we all know it is in the deck but not here yet. Unless it is the mitsumi with the quasi 24X re-write. I sure hope it is a lite-on though:-)
