The DVD Copy Control Association (DVDCCA) announced the final approve of an application that allows everyone to create DVDs, copy-protected with CSS (Content Scramble System).

Here’s a part of their press release,

With this new application of the Content Scramble System (CSS), the copy protection used on most commercially produced DVDs, vendors could, for example, create protected DVDs in custom runs at new on-demand factories or on store-based kiosks.

Individual consumers will also be able to legally record a variety of content at home, including select movies, as offered by the content owners. In addition, consumers could obtain unusual, historical, or special content that is now unavailable on DVD because existing demand does not economically allow the mass reproduction today’s market requires. The process will use special blank DVD discs with CSS encryption. The copies will be compatible with millions of DVD players in homes and businesses today.

For me it doesn’t really makes sense to make this technology available to the customers. In times of AnyDVD and DVDFab, for me this looks not more than another try to get more money in their pockets.

There hardly seems to be any point to this since just about any computer savvy 8 year old (and plenty who aren't) knows how to defeat CSS encryption.

Good question. Bit like saying "I want to create regional coded DVDs"

This is like locking your keys in your car on purpose.

The DDCCA pricks aren't "giving" anything. Except maybe rope to tie your own hands with.

Read the press release! This is to enable the ability to burn DRM-ladden downloadable ISOs to disc and to allow kiosks to sell DVDs.
