Even if the HD DVD format is now officially dead, the "old" DVD is still alive (actually, the DVD format is still the main format used by end-consumers, mostly because of the too high prices of Blu-ray devices) and Toshiba is still manufacturing DVD recorders. A new model of DVD recorder has been announced and will be available in the market in next months.
The D-R17DT is a standalone DVD recorder, i.e. there is no hard-disk included, a feature that can be disappointing for many people. Its recording capabilities are limited to four formats – DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R and DVD+R. The DVD-RAM format is not supported. Another disappointing feature is the lack of DVD-R Dual Layer and DVD+R Double Layer support.
More interesting is instead the availability of HDMI output, which offers upscaled pictures in 1080p, 1080i or 720p both for recorded contents and DVD playback.
More detailed information about the recording performance can be read in the complete review.
