UK: Samsung to ship Blu-ray next month

Some good news for all the Blu-ray enthusiasts over in the UK. According to some news which GristyMcFisty has spotted for us over at The Inquirer , Samsung will start to ship its Blu-ray player, the BD-P1000, in mid October this year. Together with the two bundled discs, SWAT and Legends of Jazz, the player will be available for approximately €1.500. And to have some other content available, Sony has also announced its plans to release some other Blu-ray titles on October 16th, these additional titles will be in the DVD cost range.

This first generation Blu-ray player has been known for having image quality issues when it has launched the US market a few months ago. According to Samsung Electronics, this issue has been solved and the unit is now ready for the launch in the UK.

>With Sky HD ready, the time is probably right for a Blu-Ray launch and Samsung believes we Brits in particular still like to own physical media rather than downloaded bytes. “It’s not like we have broadband like Korea where you can download a movie in half an hour,” said a spokesman. The Region 2 box is called the BD-P1000, plays at resolutions up to 1080p and is backwards compatible with CD and DVD formats although Samsung reckons some players from other vendors might not be.

The slow US start of the unit three month ago and the much higher price (+€800!!) makes me believe that this start will be much worse than the US start was.

Who would buy a Blu-Ray player for more than the cost of a PS3. Even if a player comes in at the cost of a PS3 it wont be a game machine as well.

1500 euro for a Samsung! LOL To sell some junk box for this much they should have come up with a lexus-like name. ..or maybe if it cant get the video straight it might do something else, like pancakes on top :+

This is the 21st century. Wake up. Do you know the present market value of "Samsung" brand name? At any rate, the 1,500 Euro price is ridiculous. You'll probably be able to get a better player for under 150 Euro in two years. Meanwhile, I can download virtually limitless HD 1920*1080 video files (10-20GB per title) and I can buy a monitor that can dispaly at up to 1920*1200 for about US$300. There are now also 26 inch LCD 1280*800 or 1360*768 monitors for US$250.

A movie in half an hour? A DVD-ripped MPEG-4 file movie of one hour or a DVD-ripped MPEG-2 file movie of two hours? At 10MB/s, you can download 18GB in half an hour. For a typical 300MB MPEG-4 video file, it takes just 30 seconds, not 30 minutes.

i think that 10MB is 10megabits/sec NOT 10megabyte/sec 10megabyte/sec=80megabit/sec

btw, in japan & korea, 100mbps connections are not unusual in japan you can get fiberoptics line called hikari (meaning light in japan) to your house which will offer 100mbps for around 80usd...at least when i was in japan in korea, most dsl service is 80mbps up 30mbps down for 45usd...& you can also lease 100mbps lan line to your own house where i live in us, fastest one is 6mbps down & less than 1mbps up for 30usd

i think ps3 is making bd adapation slow because of ps3 other CE companies are pissed as ps3 will undercut the price very much one strange thing is that sony will release its own bd player for 1500usd in us which will be sold for a lot more in uk
