Verbatim announces new memory card portfolio (Press Release)

Storage media specialist, Verbatim, has announced the relaunch and extension of its portfolio of flash memory cards, with the arrival of a new range of SD, SDHC, miniSD and microSD Cards. The tiny storage cards from Verbatim are available now and can be used wherever high performance is needed: in the latest digital cameras, mobile phones, handheld computers, MP3 players and more.

Verbatim's new SDHC flash cards offer customers reliable high-quality storage media for digital photography and video. The new Secure Digital High Capacity format (SDHC) is based on the SDA 2.0 (SD Card Association) standard and offers storage capacity of 4GB, with 8GB due for shipping soon. "Changing the file system from FAT 12/16 to FAT32 was crucial in enabling us to achieve the considerably higher storage margins of SDHC. Verbatim SDHCs belong to class 6, the highest speed class. They are especially suitable for video recordings and professional digital photography, including continuous shooting," explains Tracy Myers, Verbatim's Product Manager- Flash. SDHC cards are used in the latest generation of devices, which can read both SDHC and SD formats. Existing SD end devices are not upwardly compatible with SDHC.

The different power levels are indicated by the three speed classes: class 2 guarantees a minimum write speed of 2Mbyte/s, class 4 guarantees 4Mbyte/s and class 6, the highest class, guarantees 6Mbytes per second. "The SDHC format allows you to record real-time video with your camcorder straight on to the card. In AVCHD normal mode you can store up to 120 minutes' worth of film. There are benefits for classic photography too. Being able to photograph without constantly worrying about the capacity of the flash card is more enjoyable all round," says Myers. A 6 megapixel digital camera can store around 1280 pictures on a single 4GB SDHC card, while a 8GB SDHC card can store around 2500 pictures. The 4GB SDHC card is available now, with 8GB expected soon.

miniSD Cards for 3G applications

The miniSD card from Verbatim is particularly interesting for the new mobile telephone generation from Nokia, Siemens and Motorola. It is specially designed to meet the requirements of the 3G market. Measuring 20 mm x 21.5 mm x 1.4 mm, it is around half the size of a regular secure digital card and yet it can fit in any normal SD slot with the supplied adapter. Additional hardware functions on the card also include special copyright protection so that data can be safely downloaded from the internet and played - important for professional use or in MP3 players. Verbatim MiniSD cards are available now in 1GB and 2GB capacities.

microSD memory card for mobile entertainment

The microSD is currently one of the smallest memory cards available and enables the user to save and transfer pictures and data easily from different mobile devices. Designed specially for mobile phones, this tiny memory card (11mm x 1mm x 15mm) consumes very little power, therefore preserving the battery life of your mobile phone. In addition, it can be also used in GPS devices, MP3 players, digital cameras and PDAs. The Verbatim microSD 2GB features a read speed of up to 4 MB per second and a write speed of up to 2 MB per second. With the SD adaptor which comes with it, the microSD card can be used as a standard size SD card, which means it is compatible with a much wider variety of devices. Verbatim microSD cards are available now in capacities of 1GB and 2GB.
