Verizon has launched two new Web-connected channels to its nationwide Fios TV service, announcing yet another feature for consumers interested in interactive TV.
Verizon now works with Facebook Connect, ESPN, Dailymotion, Twitter, Veoh, and other partners to help TV viewers connect with one another while not sitting behind a computer.
Additional widgets will be available through the Widget Bazaar, which developers can have a crack at using Verizon’s development tools.
"With FiOS, passive TV becomes social TV, part of the sweeping cultural shift that’s changing how people connect with one another to share ideas, information and entertainment," Verizon said in a statement. ""We’re working with some of the most popular companies on the Web to create the foundation for a high-quality, engaging Internet-to-TV experience that will only expand and grow richer."
Both content providers and hardware manufacturers are beginning to offer connected services as more TV viewers crave interactive entertainment. Video game consoles, set-top boxes, and DVD and Blu-ray players offer streaming Netflix and similar services, with that trend expected to continue in the future.
I first saw this type of technology a couple of years ago, and the way it has progressed has surprised me. I remember some critics noting people didn’t want to have their TV be able to view pictures and content from cameras, have widgets, or any other technologies widgets currently offer — but that is obviously not true. Streaming services and enhanced TV are growing in popularity, especially due to relatively low prices considering what consumers get in return.
Expect additional companies to become involved in this living room revolution, as there is serious money that can be made.
