Vizio has introduced a new standalone Blu-ray player that will be released later this year with a retail price of $199.

Consumers on a budget can purchase the new VBR100 blu-ray player which ooffers 108MHz/11-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC), 1080p quality, Profile 2.0 compatible, 7.1 analog audio outputs, and onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-Master Audio.

It’ll play Blu-ray, DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD, audio CD-R and CD-RW, and MP3 CDs.

The Vizio VBR100 will be available in April.

Most of you probably know Vizio as a manufacturer of low-cost HDTVs, but the company continues to branch out and create TVs, Blu-ray players, and speakers designed to offer consumers on a budget the opportunity to watch HD content.

The majority of Blu-ray players unveiled during CES have additional perks and benefits, but with many of you wanting cheaper Blu-ray players, there obviously is a market for a Blu-ray player that could be $149 sometime in the future.

Now if the greedy entertainment distributors can get the prices in line with sd DVDs -- and blank bd media gets down to at least $1 or less/disc -- the lower priced players may look more tempting. But the initial investment of $200 or less isn't enough to justify the current cost of the aftermarket software.

It's nice to see cheaper BD Live players on the horizon. Heck, this player might even launch at less than $199 by the time it ships.

Totally agree with you on that.. The price of blank BD media is the ultimate decision maker for me as to when and if I get on the BD bandwagon.. With two small kids running around and ripping things apart, Id like to be able to make affordable backups of any Blu-Ray titles.. Lets not also forget to mention more affordable BD movie titles..

At CES they just started announcing NAS and Laptops that are able to legally backup your Blu Ray discs and stream them to certified devices (like any 2.0 blu ray player). I know this means taking up hard drive space but's a better solution then burned back ups

That can also be a viable option considering the cheap cost of hard disks and the ability to re-encode the movie in high defination resolutions to save on hard disk space..

Sadly I can't. I just skimmed for the past 30 minutes through Engadget (which is where I saw it) and I can't find the link again. Maybe they were not supposed to release the info but I can at least say I can't find it now.
