Microsoft has revealed its plans behind the X-Box as you can read in the press release…

To best meet initial demand for the Microsoft(r) Xbox(tm) video game system around the world, Microsoft Corp. today announced key elements of its Xbox manufacturing and logistics plans. Under the plans, the company will bolster distribution capabilities by working with Flextronics International Ltd. to establish Xbox manufacturing facilities in several regions of the world.

Microsoft also confirmed its plans to launch Xbox in North America and Japan in fall 2001 and in Europe in the first quarter of 2002, carefully staging the rollout of Xbox so that demand can be met in each region.

“Our goal is to carry out a strong Xbox launch that is well-orchestrated and well-supported,” said Robbie Bach, senior vice president of the Games Division and chief Xbox officer (CXO) at Microsoft. “Meeting Xbox customer needs is job No. 1. After analyzing the supply and logistics challenges faced by the gaming industry this holiday season, we decided to clarify our new manufacturing plans so that we successfully meet product demand.”

Flextronics will initially establish and manage regional Xbox manufacturing operations in Mexico and Hungary. Noted for its flexibility, quality and speed in manufacturing consumer electronics products, including Microsoft’s other hardware products, Flextronics has demonstrated its ability to deliver premium full-service global manufacturing projects. In addition, Microsoft’s long-term plan is to open a manufacturing facility in Asia to support markets in that region, including Japan.

“Establishing regional manufacturing facilities will make the distribution support and service to our global retailers more efficient,” Bach said. “Microsoft is the only video game supplier that has set up a manufacturing and distribution center in Europe. And by deliberately staging our launches, we can better ensure that we meet customer demand in each area of the world.”

With nearly a year before the Xbox launch, Microsoft has made tremendous progress in garnering support from the game development and retail community. The company has signed more than 200 of the world’s top game developers and publishers to create Xbox games. For example, it announced last week that Electronic Arts will provide up to 10 titles during the Xbox launch period.

It seems the launch of the X-Box is well arranged.. For more information on the X-Box: http://www.xbox.com/.

the x box cannot compete, it is not bold enough to be a proper platform, too close to the pc (not that the pc is at all bad, just different), and not capable enough at what it does, i.e. needs installations, to beat the competition, which is quite strong! http://www.cdfreaks.com/jochem/../smilies//smile.gif

BELIEVE THIS!!!

I agree 100% with x I've played on a ps2, cause I tought that the grapic quality would be finally better or equal like a pc, but to be honest...the graphics still SUCK if you compare them with a pc using a nvidia or 3dfx powered accelerator, the graphics are better then the ps1 no doubt about that, consoles are better on many things (faster, cheaper if you use copied games, etc...) but a console that matches the graphics quality from a pc is still not on the market...I'm affraid http://www.cdfreaks.com/jochem/../smilies//frown.gif

Any console is only really of use to people if games can be copied. I have had a PS2 and sold it, I have booted up Dreamcast software and noticed that basically there isn`t really that much difference between the two. The PS2 is already dead as there are only a handful of decent games coming out for the PS2 in the next two years. A lot of stuff is old rehashed software like theme park. Personally I will not buy another PS2 until it can be hacked. As for the X-Box, have any of you got power PCs? If you have then you should know that PC games are pretty shit hot, you can apply patches, have more saved games etc. Ever played a microsoft game? Motocross madness 2 is a very shit hot game, and it`s microsoft. Play it and find out.

Dennis you don't know anything about TV do you ? Normal TV have very low resolution, therefore there is no point in the PSX2 or any other console to go higher. To everyone, many of us like consoles better for certain game - like fighting games because of the better joypad controls - the PC is great - but most joypads are just crap !!!!!!

Gonna sick my nose in, and piss some people off!

first - TV has 625 lines vertical
(unless U'R in america!)
horizontal resolution?
tv horizontal is linear, so if you can generate 20000 pixels across then it will try to display it.
how good it looks is down to he design of the tube.

now - X-BOX.

if his shit takes off then the first thing to pirate and install will be LINUX!!!!!!!
WIN-CE can fuckoff, my friend has a cassiopia running CE,
what a shit-heap!!!!!
HE is hoping for a LINUX port soon!

for now - G-FORCE2 RULEZ!!!!!

Check the facts. X-Box will run with a Win2000/whistler core. It will not be WinCE. Win2000 core IS stable. The instability comes from wrong dll version installed by 3rd party software! The core will be on a chip and you will not be able to fuck it up. Each games runs from the DVD and the stuff it must install on the HD will be seperated and cannot inpact other games. And since hardware is standard, I don't see why it won't be as stable as the games are coded. Fuck PSX2, this baby will have gigahertz CPU and a new generation nvidia chip which is up to many times faster than Geforce2 Ultra! 64 mb ram sounds strange but let's see what it ends with as ram is very cheap at the moment.

Has anybody ever thought of what actually makes the consoles and the games?? It is all done by computers! So what is the argument between computers and consoles choosing which is the best? Consoles are good but will never be as advanced as the computer! AS for graphic wise, computers will always be one step ahead! The only downside to the computer is that bugs are found on the software! Remember that when creating a game on the console there is a limit to every aspect of the game but in a computer, the skys the limit! Oh yes how can u judge what the X-Box is like before it is released? Just because u hate Microsoft does not mean it won't turn out to be a great console! http://www.cdfreaks.com/jochem/../smilies//smile.gif

I have seen some demo games from X-Box (I live in the UK so yet to see the REAL thing). From the demo screenshots I like Microsoft's marketing strategy, I noticed even on that Sega racing title every billboard has a nice Microsoft logo on it (is it like this in the real game? Could this be MS's requirement for developing games for X-Box? - probably!) Reading through some of the posts about X-box I have thought about the following comments:- TV resolution - I have a 3DFX card with TV Out and I've managed to get our Philips Widescreen Pro Logic to display a resolution of 1024x768 so TV's can display higher than 640x480 (I also wanted to try and get the 3DFX card to display it in 1024x576 (Widescreen) but 'cos it's none standard my 3DFX card won't display it. Now that's what is needed in a games console, the option to display the game either in Widescreen or normal mode (which would be an easy trick to do with modern 3d games). Also I can't believe nVidia have done the 3D GPU for the X-Box, that means I definatly won't be buying one. I have tried 5 different nVidia graphics cards in my computer and every time I got one, it either ran all the games to slow, or totally screwed up my computer and left drivers all over the place, or just crashed every game I ran on it. I lost my faith in nVidia along time ago when I was looking for a cheap alternative to the 3DFX (in the end I settled for an ATI Xpert 98, which got replaced with a Voodoo3 3000 (and still haven't found anything that comes close to it's power)) And also the great demise of most console systems has to be the price of the games, this christmas I was looking at getting a PS2 but after seeing all games around the £50 mark I thought no fuck that why should I pay a quarter of the consoles price just for 1 fucking game, that's most probably a copy of every other game (either Wolfenstein 3D or Tomb Raider, just with different or slightly enhanced graphics). To make the console successful they should release two sections, a budget section and a full price, the full price for all the idiots who want to pay £50 for a game that's nearly identical to the budget ones at £5, and the budget ones for the sensible people who can buy about 10 different games for the price of 1 and just wait for the full price to come down to budget level. This is how the PC survives in gaming. Either that or if the full price games can't be copied then the console will struggle as well (look at the N64 - that will teach you for being greedy, fuck you Nintendo) - another way the PC survives, as a lot of people (like me), get the full price games when they first come out as a copy, then when the developer's decide to lower the price go and buy the budget version (like the "Sold-Out" range) (paying the developer for his/her work and remaining "legal&quot. And finally someone made a comment that you shouldn't get blue screens on the X-box 'cos you only get them on PC 'cos 3rd party manufacturer's don't know how to write drivers but the X-box won't have any 3rd party hardware - WRONG! what about memory cards? cable boxes (I believe the X-box does have ethernet for cable modem doesn't it?), joystick, joypads, steering wheels, USB devices, all will require some form of driver and there will be third party's making these devices (like the PSX, first you just got SONY memorycards, then other manufacturer's figured out how to make memory cards - some of which now can crash the PSX due to corrupt drivers, memory, parts, etc) As far as I can see the Microsoft X box will be another console to end up like Microsoft's other computer building attempts (the MSX and the MSX 2 - I suppose you could even look at the X Box as the MSX 3 - what is it with Microsoft and X's?) nowhere. (MSX's are old 8-bit computers that used the Z80 processor and 32k of memory and were really simple to use and easy to program, but only got somewhere in Japan 'cos they were beaten in the US and UK by the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum - despite being sold by numerous electronic firms including Sanyo, Toshiba and Matsushita (Technics/National/Panasonic).)
