A report published by the Wall Street Journal indicates Microsoft is developing a new video camera that will be used with the Xbox 360 game console so gamers can control games with body movement.
Even though its hardware isn’t on the same level as the Xbox 360 or Sony PlayStation 3, the Nintendo Wii game console has outsold both consoles as gamers have taken to the Wii’s unique Wii Remote (Wiimote) that uses motion sensing capabilities from a built-in accelerometer.
Unlike the Wiimote, the Xbox 360 camera, which will be located close to the game unit and TV, will track a player’s hand, leg and head movement — gamers won’t be required to hold or move any hardware. Furthermore, the camera is a 3D camera that is able to track movement better than earlier cameras, the WSJ report says.
Based off of Microsoft technology, the company also will rely on patents and technology developed by 3DV Systems, a startup company specializing in 3D technology that Microsoft purchased recently.
Microsoft hasn’t confirmed that it is working on such a camera, but it makes perfect sense. As someone who grew up spending more time PC gaming, I still don’t really like using console controllers, and have found the Wiimote a fun, interactive way to play video games. It would be great if Microsoft is able to release a new camera that is able to track movement well enough for gamers like me.
If true, the camera will be introduced sometime during E3 next month, but it will not likely be released until closer to the holiday shopping season.
