AACS-LA renew legal pressure on DVDFab

In a motion filed with a US Federal Court in New York, the AACS-LA has moved for a judgement of contempt of court (PDF) by DVDFab and Feng Tao Software, arguing that this company has ignored a court ruling made in 2015, prohibiting sales of their Blu-ray and DVD decryption software in the United States.

The AACS-LA is a consortium of several movie studios and other companies, established to set encryption standards for Blu-ray, and licensing for that format.  They have been more active over the last couple of years, trying to eliminate software that can remove their encryption and allow anyone to make copies of the physical discs.

The court case in 2015 found in favor of the AACS-LA, and an injunction was placed on the sale of DVDFab and related products.  DVDFab temporarily suspended sales in the US, but have set up a new website with a .cn domain name, and sales of their products have gone unrestricted for some time.

In the motion now before the court, the AACS-LA say that they have been able to access and purchase DVDFab products without having to resort to a VPN to hide their US address.  They also complain about another product called VidOn, which is an XBMC addon that also uses the decryption technology seen in DVDFab and DVDFab Passkey.

The AACS-LA are now asking for heavy fines to be imposed, saying: "Plaintiff requests the Court impose a coercive sanction of $10,000 per day on Defendants, continuing until Defendants come into compliance with the Amended PI Order."

I doubt that the AACS-LA actually expect any significant results from this motion, the fines will never be paid, but they will undoubtedly use a positive ruling as justification to shut down credit card sales from American companies at the DVDFab.cn site.  Its one step at a time in their efforts to hinder the companies making effective decryption software.
