ADATA announces S596 Turbo SSD

ADATA has announced a new product to their storage lineup that has some very noteworthy features. The new S596 Turbo is a dual-interface solid state drive that promises to be faster, and possibly more reliable, than any other SSD currently on the market.

The ADATA S596 Turbo uses a JMicron JMF616 controller with a DDR2 128M cache buffer to achieve transfer speeds that are up to 20% higher than that of ADATA’s current fastest SSD. Read speeds for the S596 Turbo can reach 260 MB/s, while it can write at up to 210 MB/s. The JMF616 controller is also supposed to eliminate “sudden standstill during data transmission”.

The dual-interface capability means that the S596 Turbo is able to connect via either a SATA II or mini- USB connection for internal or external drive usage. The 2.5” aluminum case makes the S596 a suitable replacement laptop hard drive, or it can be installed in a desktop with a 3.5” adapter.

A couple of other cool features that are built into the ADATA S596 Turbo include support for Windows 7 Trim command to enable significantly reduced boot times and Static wear-leveling technology that is supposed to extend the life of the drive.

While no pricing information has yet been released for the S596 Turbo, ADATA has announced that the SSD will be available in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB capacities. Each model will come with a 3-year warranty and a downloadable 60-day trial for Norton Internet Security 2010.

While the S596 Turbo will likely make a pricey entry into the SSD market, it’s good to see more advancements being made to improve SSD performance and reliability. However, since the ADATA press release makes no mention of power consumption, one has to wonder if the S596 Turbo could be a bit of a battery hog when installed in a notebook. It will be an interesting one to watch once reviews start coming out.
