Adblockers had negative impact on Facebook's revenue

Facebook reports in its annual report that adblockers had a negative impact on the company's revenue. Because a substantial part of Facebook's revenues come from advertising the company fears the increasing popularity of software that blocks ads. Especially if they become popular on mobile platforms as well.

"Revenue generated from the display of ads on personal computers has been impacted by these technologies from time to time. As a result, these technologies have had an adverse effect on our financial results and, if such technologies continue to proliferate, in particular with respect to mobile platforms, our future financial results may be harmed", the social network writes in its filing for the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Last Wednesday Facebook reported its latest quarterly numbers which revealed that the social network's revenue grew with 50% and that its profit doubled.

With adblockers users can block advertisements on websites. Because users no longer see them, website owners lose revenue. Since 2015 when iOS 9 was released also iPhones, iPads and iPods support adblocking. On Google's mobile operating system Android this was already possible.
