The fast updates are part of Project Milky Way which Microsoft announced during a session on Windows 10 updates during WinHEC. The aim of the project is, according to Microsoft, to "delight" users by updating their mobile devices within 4-6 week after the release of an update.

Microsoft will facilitate the testing and downloading, will collect feedback from users and provide partners with guidelines to achieve this goal. Microsoft expects partners to stick to a specific schedule when testing and reporting issues in the testing stage.

Microsoft also announced that Windows 10 will support partition stitching during the session at WinHEC. This means that when there's sufficient space on the user partition but the system partition is too small for an update, Windows 10 will enlarge the system partition to make installation possible.
