AMD launches powerful dual-GPU Radeon HD 6990 video card

AMD on Tuesday launched a new dual-GPU video card, created for the “power gamer,” that the company is purporting to be the “fastest graphics card in the world.”

The Radeon HD 6990, code-named “Antilles”, is a monster of a video card with a price tag to match, but the sheer power and customization options should leave few hard-core gamers needing anything more anytime soon.

The size of the card alone is immense. While the HD 6990 plugs into a single PCI slot, it is actually two slots wide and nearly a foot long. With that size, however, comes two AMD 6970 GPUs, 4GB of GDDR5 (2GB dedicated to each GPU), and 830 MHz speeds that can be overclocked to 880 Mhz with just the flick of a switch.

There are also five display outputs on the card, including four mini-display ports and a dual-link DVI port, which will let the user drive up to six displays simultaneously via DisplayPort 1 components that AMD states will be available later this year. Alternate configurations include support for five 24-inch monitors in portrait mode, or even three 30-inch displays.

“Packing more raw performance than any consumer graphics card ever created, the AMD Radeon HD 6990 provides the latest for the ultimate gaming advantage,” said Matt Skynner, VP and GM of AMD’s GPU division. “Coupled with AMD Eyefinity multi-display technology, AMD PowerTune power management and AMD HD3D, this card is so powerful it can take on even the most demanding ultra-enthusiast tasks.”

With an MSRP of $699, the Radeon HD 6990 is not something that that will appeal to anything less than a power-user, however if you’ve already invested in a system that can handle power required to run this monstrosity (375W standard, 450W overclocked) you may not mind paying the high price.
