Apple is the #1 notebook brand on US college campuses

Apple notebooks remain popular among U.S. universities and are now claiming the number one brand spot in US college campuses. About 1 out of every 4 college students owns an Apple notebook, Student Monitor recently revealed in a research report.

Around 95 percent of all the college students surveyed as part of the study said they own at least one PC or notebook.  About 27 percent own Apple notebooks, with 45 percent of desktop users owning Dell or Hewlett-Packard machines.

When a participant said they expect to purchase a new computer, 87 percent said they wanted to purchase a notebook -- 47 percent said they want to buy a Mac.

A report published without sources and specific details indicated upwards of 70 percent of incoming U.S. freshman want a Mac.  There was immediate skepticism as to how the research was collected, which led it to be widely overlooked by many consumers.

The study doesn't go into depth regarding why Apple's products are seeing a higher adoption trend, but Apple’s high appeal and trendy image are likely important factors.  Apple also offers students a discount for its desktops and notebooks, including discounted products and services.

Both PC manufacturers and software makers consider Apple a threat, with Microsoft recently launching a new anti-Mac marketing campaign.  The company continues to struggle in its efforts to connect with college-age users and younger generations, while Apple and a few other tech companies have been successful.

Hewlett-Packard also launched a similar anti-Apple marketing ploy, but Apple has been able to shrug off the attacks.  HP and Dell must now fight to claw their way back into the picture, because Apple has an appealing product lineup ranging from MP3 players to smartphones to notebooks/tablets.

It's important to note that the Mac OS is not the most popular operating system used on notebooks in college campuses. Windows is still the top OS by a good margin, Apple just has more hardware market-share than any one particular Windows notebook manufacturer. I think Apple's rivals still have a chance to capture the attention of a majority of college students, but it will be extremely difficult to break through Apple's strong hype machine.
