Apple sued for design defect that makes iPhone 6 touchscreens unusable

Apple has been sued in the United States for a design defect that makes the touchscreen of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus unusable. The Cupertino technology giant is reportedly aware of the problems but doesn't want to pay for repairs outside the warranty period. The plaintiffs, three Americans, seek for unspecified damages in a proposed nationwide class-action lawsuit, Reuters reports.

The issue usually surfaces after a flickering gray bar appears at the top of the screen which, according to the plaintiffs, is caused by Apple's decision to not use a metal shield to protect relevant parts. The same shield was applied in the iPhone 5 but is absent in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

After the flickering gray bar appears on the affected iPhone's touch screen it becomes unusable. The popular repair website iFixit has confirmed the issue and has named it "Touch Disease".

Apparently Apple has been aware of the defect for some time already but has refused to fix it. The company only offers free repairs to users whose phone is under warranty.
