Apple to make high quality 24 bit / 96kHz audio mainstream by offering it in Apple Music

Apple is working on an improved audio format that provides higher quality audio for its music streaming service Apple Music. The new format will have sample rate of 96kHz and a bit depth of 24 bits, according to the Japanese website Macotakara.

The improved sound quality would be better than can supported by the regular audio output of iPhones and iPads. Last year Apple already made improvements to its Lightning connector to support the higher audio quality.

At the end of November this year there were also rumors that Apple was planning to phase out the 3.5mm audio jack from its upcoming iPhone. Early leaks of the upcoming iPhone 7 also indicate that Apple has said goodbye to the good old jack connector.

The Lightning connector would replace the jack as output for audio. In practice this means that headphones should connect to the iPhone 7 using the Lightning connector.

Audio files in 24 bit / 96 kHz should improve audio quality but also take up more storage space. A minute of MP3 audio in that quality takes up about 33MB.
