AT&T informs some customers their accounts were attacked

On Monday AT&T informed some of its subscribers of an attempt to hack accounts and collect information. Customers were informed via email by the telecommunications company and were assured that no accounts were actually breached.

Businessweek reports that the email, sent from AT&T to subscribers stated,

“We recently detected an organized and systematic attempt to obtain information on a number of AT&T customer accounts, including yours. We do not believe that the perpetrators of this attack obtained access to your online account or any of the information contained in that account.”

In an additional email statement to press, company spokesman Mark Siegel claimed the hackers used "auto script technology" in an effort to "determine whether AT&T telephone numbers were linked to online AT&T accounts." Siegel further stated in a telephone interview that less than 1 percent of AT&T accounts were affected by the attack. Siegel made sure to state that no accounts were actually breached and that the company was still working to figure out where the attack came from.

It was also quickly noted by the company that a wireless service outage that affected customers in the northeast U.S. on Monday, disabling service for about three hours, was not connected to the hacking attempt.

Hopefully AT&T has put a stop to whatever was going on here and customer accounts really weren't breached in the process. Did you get an email from AT&T about your account? Let us know in the comments.
